Why Join?
The concepts of cost containment and high quality healthcare are applicable to any practice setting.
Even if you do not plan on explicitly pursuing a career in managed care, you will gain valuable professional knowledge. Whether you work in a retail, hospital, managed care, or any other pharmacist setting you will be faced with the challenge of acquiring the best medication therapy for your patient vs. cost effectiveness. The ability to combine clinical knowledge with business rationale allow pharmacists to provide care to populations of patients and make an impact on a greater scale. As students, we are rarely exposed to managed care pharmacy in the curriculum so AMCP strives to fill this gap by hosting informative meetings and educational workshops that give students an opportunity to learn from pharmacists in executive positions that make managed care decisions every day. Participating in a P&T competition is also a great way to walk into the real world of the formulary process. If you have an interest in business, entrepreneurship, healthcare consulting, public health, pharmacoeconomics, health outcomes research, or health policy, AMCP can provide you with the knowledge and connections to find the career path in pharmacy that is best suited for you! By being involved in AMCP, you will continuously be inspired by areas of pharmacy that are new, innovative, and have the potential to improve healthcare for all. |
What is Managed Care?
Managed care health care workers have one common goal: "to ensure that all patients have access to the pharmaceuticals they need and that the medications they take are improving their lives."
What is Managed Care?
The basic principle of managed care is to provide therapeutically AND cost effective health care to populations rather than individual patients. Managed care pharmacists focus on finding the most sensible/logical medication options for their clients (companies, hospitals, institutions, insurance plans, etc.) to put on formularies (preferred list of drugs).
According to the AMCP website, over 200 million Americans are covered by health insurance. Someone has to design and implement drug benefits under these health insurance plans to make sure patients have access to their needed medications while maintaining safety and cost-effectiveness.

Here are some tasks faced by managed care health care practitioners:
- Assess new drugs on the market for safety and effectiveness
- Ensure patients are aware of potentially harmful drug interactions
- Apply medication therapy management practice for appropriate medication use
- Develop programs to assist in medication adherence
- Patient education and the continuum of care
- Utilize tools and incentives to keep the cost of medications under control
- Participate in Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) committees to evaluate drugs on formulary
